Facts about the Orangutan
- They can only be found in South east Asia on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra. the local translation of orangutan is 'people of the forest'
- The orangutan are VERY intelligent being able to use tools like leaves as umbrellas and sticks to collect honey.
- Is one of our closest relatives, with 97% of the same DNA as us.
- The orangutan is the only great ape found outside of Africa.
- The orangutan is the largest tree living mammal in the world.
- Every night the orangutan must make a nest from branches and foliage to sleep in.
- Many people think that the orangutan has 4 hands instead of 2 hand and 2 feet. This is sad due to there ability to climb through the trees.
- An orangutan’s lifespan is about 30-40 years in the wild, and sometimes into the 50’s in captivity.
- “Orangutan females only give birth about once every 6-11 years - the longest time between births of any mammal on earth. (This results in only 4 to 5 babies in her lifetime.) This is why orangutan populations are very slow to recover from disturbance.”
- Males often weigh over 200 pounds, where females are 1/3 to 1/2 his size.
- Orangatans are endangered rainforest species
